Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT)

The Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) is a method for calculating income tax that has a distinct set of rules for deductions and exemptions, which are more restrictive than those in the traditional tax system. The purpose of the AMT is to ensure that certain high-income taxpayers do not pay a lower effective tax rate than others. To determine if the AMT applies, taxpayers must complete IRS Form 6251.
