Share

A share is a unit of ownership in a corporation, mutual fund, exchange-traded fund (ETF), real estate investment trust (REIT), or other investment vehicle. Owning shares means having a fractional claim on the assets, earnings, and, in some cases, voting rights of the corporation or fund. Common shares typically grant voting rights and potential dividends, while preferred shares offer priority on dividends and liquidation proceeds but may lack voting rights. The value of shares fluctuates based on the performance and prospects of the underlying company or asset and they can be bought and sold on public exchanges or privately.
