Power of Attorney

A power of attorney is a legal document in which one person (called the "principal") authorizes another person (called the "agent" or "attorney-in-fact") to act on their behalf and make decisions regarding financial, legal, or medical matters. Powers of attorney can be general (broad authority), limited (specific tasks), or durable (remaining effective even if the principal becomes incapacitated). The scope and powers granted are specified by the principal in the document and are effective as long as the principal is alive and competent, unless made durable or revoked.
